Understanding Dental Infections and Abscesses

A dental infection occurs when bacteria invade the tooth or surrounding gum tissue. Without treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of your body and become life-threatening.

Periapical Abscess

An infection at the tip of the tooth’s root, usually caused by untreated decay or a cracked tooth that allows bacteria to reach the inner pulp. Causes severe, persistent throbbing pain.

Periodontal Abscess

An infection in the gum tissue next to the tooth root, often associated with gum disease. The gum may appear swollen, red, and may drain pus when pressed.

Gingival Abscess

An infection limited to the gum surface, often caused by food or debris trapped between the tooth and gum. Usually less severe but still requires treatment to prevent spreading.

Signs: Throbbing Pain

Infection pain is typically constant, throbbing, and gets worse over time. It may radiate to your ear, jaw, or neck. Pain that wakes you up at night is a strong indicator of infection.

Signs: Facial Swelling

Swelling in the face, cheek, or under the jaw indicates the infection is spreading beyond the tooth. Swelling that is getting larger or making it hard to open your mouth is an emergency.

Signs: Fever or Malaise

A fever, general feeling of being unwell, swollen lymph nodes, or fatigue alongside tooth pain means your body is fighting an active infection that needs immediate treatment.

What to Do Right Now

These steps can help manage symptoms while you wait for your appointment:

  1. Rinse with warm salt water several times a day — mix half a teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water. This helps draw out infection and reduce bacteria.
  2. Take over-the-counter pain relief — ibuprofen helps reduce both pain and inflammation. Follow the dosage instructions on the label.
  3. Do NOT stop antibiotics early if prescribed — even if you feel better, complete the full course to prevent the infection from returning stronger.
  4. Avoid very hot or cold foods — extreme temperatures can worsen pain in an infected tooth.
  5. Do NOT try to drain the abscess yourself — squeezing or popping an abscess can push bacteria deeper into the tissue or bloodstream.
  6. Sleep with your head elevated — propping your head up with an extra pillow can reduce throbbing pain and swelling.

Dental Infections Can Be Life-Threatening

Go to the emergency room immediately if you experience any of the following, then call us for follow-up dental care:

Emergency Warning Signs

These symptoms indicate the infection may be spreading dangerously:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling spreading to your eye, neck, or floor of the mouth
  • Fever over 101°F
  • Difficulty opening your mouth (trismus)
  • Feeling faint, confused, or extremely unwell

These are signs of a potentially life-threatening emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest ER, then contact Divine Smiles at 203-865-1480 for follow-up dental treatment.

Dental Infections Do Not Go Away on Their Own

Antibiotics alone are not enough — the source of the infection inside the tooth must be treated. Call Divine Smiles now for same-day emergency care.

My wisdom tooth chipped and gave me extreme pain on Friday night. I couldn't find a dental office willing to take me on Saturday. Sunday Morning I couldn't take the pain as it escalated to my jaw and though out other teeth. After searching on google I found this was the ONLY dental office that was open on a Sunday and takes walk-ins. The wait time was minimal and the young lady at the front desk was so understanding and helpful. The tech who took photos of my teeth was patient and Dr. Yanatan Zakinov was the best dentist I've ever met. He was straightforward, honest, and didn't try to talk about anything else but the problem I was having. He looked at my teeth and knew right away an extraction of my wisdom tooth had to be done. He was careful to make sure there was no pain and kept insisting that I let him know if I feel any pain. Within 20 minutes of seeing him, my tooth was extracted and my pain was gone. I 100% recommend going there and I'm looking forward to my future appointments with them.

I was a walk in emergency appointment on a Sunday morning and ended up needing two teeth extracted. I also happen to have anxiety surrounding dental visits so I was unsure of what to expect (I was here from out of town). Dr. Jacob was very understanding and gentle with the procedure. He took time to discuss options with me and did not push for anything extra or unnecessary. If I lived locally I would have gladly continued on with them as my primary dental care providers.

Like other reviews I had a similar experience. I was in a lot of pain, in need of an extraction. Divine Dental got me in within an hour after I called. Dr. Alex broke things down simply and was kind; As well as his assistant. This will be my new dental office. Thanks to everyone who helped today, from the front desk to the x-ray tech. You all made a difficult time a little easier to manage.
